How to Live Fence
Live fencing is for security. So lantana camara can serve the purpose, also the leaves can later be used for natural pest repellent. But live fencing if provides additional income to the farmers will be of much use. So along with lantana camara, if mehendi(Henna) also is planted in a second layer provides additional security and also income to the farmers. If subabul or gliricidia or Malabar neem or any such height growing plants if planted with these 2 rows provides additional income in the long run and also acts as wind barriers.
Lantana camara
Henna
Subhabul
In live fencing some principles has to be followed as per Permaculture way: in East and North should not plant very high trees as sunrays in morning hrs get blocked early morning sunrays between 7-9am are very good for plants.
In South and West planting big trees is useful as they block hot sunrays as day progresses
Gliricidia
Malabar Neem
Other choices used generally are vitex negundo, mehendi, subabul, drumsticks, Bamboo
Vitex extract can be used to repel sucking pests . Same is for Lantana Camara
Subabul is leguminous and provide good fodder and fuel
Maringa is the natural micro water sprinklers. Its keep cool the surroundings
Gliricidia wherever roots spread it enriches soil with N
Lantana camara stem is used to make card-board. It's a powerful pesticide. You can use it as a support structure for vegetable vines. Vegetables yield more when hanging or climbing. It is used as fuel too… as fuel n cardboard research is going on
Vitex Negundo
Moringa
When it comes to fencing for protection, like in areas where we face acute problem of crop destruction by wild and stray cattle and pigs, it must be bushy thorns.. Like
Vakkai/Kalimekay. Kouli hannu/ crane berry / Karonda/kilaakkai/Carissa Carandas: is very good as it has thorns and gives very tasty fruit and has medicinal properties…
Karonda
Casuarina grove
The 'Casuarina Tree' is such a tree that has a general appearance of a coniferophyta tree. The scientific name of this tree is 'Casuarina Equisetifolia' and it suggests that the bunches of the leaves are like a horse's tail. The name of its family is 'Casuaranaceae'. Grows well in sandy soil places especially along sea coasts. Side stems & leaves used as fuel in cooking.

For border plantation -Teak tree and bamboo can be considered which will give income also.
Typical technique used for fences include planting appropriate species — Starting with stems, or root cuttings or seeds — at close spacing. As they mature, the saplings are cropped tightly to force thick, bushy growth and form an impenetrable fence.
Bamboo
Another fascinating option is to join the individual plants in which trunks, branches of two trees grow together.
Teak
Trees or shrubs that are used for joining are planted 4 to 8 inches apart. As they grow, their branches are tied, and they then grow together. The result is a closely meshed barrier that becomes stronger and more resistant each year.
You may certainly mix different species in your living fences. You could set larger trees — fruit or nut trees, for example — at greater spacing than a tightly planted hedge, and then fill the gaps with lower growing species such as rose or any edible fruit bearing thorny plants of your choice
